About the Danen Garden

Ours is a city garden in a small condominium yard, facing north. Spring doesn't usually start in Edmonton until mid April and to be safe, we don't plant our annuals until after the May long weekend. Mid September is usually the end of the season for this little yard, although I've managed to get life out of perennials until the end of October... Love it when you can cheat nature... :)

Some people say it's my Dutch background that accounts for my green thumb, but I don't think that's it at all. It's my dad who showed me how enjoyable gardening can be. He just happened to be Dutch...

The yard is about 45 feet long and 18 feet wide. Of the 45 feet, 17 feet is a concrete patio, which would be at the bottom of the picture. The picture is not the prettiest, but illustrates the size and layout of the garden. It also shows that the sun is pretty much gone at the end of October (at least on any plant material), not to return until about March.

After the May long weekend, it is usually deemed safe to start planting annuals. I've planted earlier, but there have been snowfalls that spoiled everything... As you can see, things are greening up as opposed to the March picture below.

As you can see, the pond features quite prominently. In it, I keep koi and goldfish, as well as waterlilies.

The front yard is only a small piece with a spruce tree, some daylilies, irises, and whatever else sprouts there. Hmmm... I thought I had a decent photo...
